Love's Universe: The School of Love Meditative Reading

Recently, I've been preoccupied by life having completed a major move back home to Florida and being filled with doubts and fears... I realized I'm off my center.

In an attempt to get in touch with my true self and meditate on the past 3 months I ran across an amazing book excerpt by Kabir Helminski and wanted to share a section as it resonated with me...

Relationship, humility and interdependence

We do not reach love completely on our own. If we are loveless in and of ourselves, it is because we are living with our center of gravity in the false self. The false self is created from the desires and compulsions of our own separateness. This false self believes strongly in its own existence as separate from the rest of life and it recruits the intellect to help defend this illusion at the expense of the whole mind, the essential Self.

There is nothing more difficult than to make two minds one, that is to help them to love each other. If two or more people are in love there is harmony, a unity of purpose without the loss of individuality. When we are only thinking of ourselves, our desires and needs, there is disharmony and we feel at cross-purposes. We live in a culture that emphasizes the individual at the expense of relationship. More and more people are alone and lonely.

It is the nature of Love to create relationships. You might say it is Unity expressing itself. The lover, the beloved, and love itself are all really a unity.

The fruits of Love

Can the ego overcome its own separation? Most probably not, because it will still be playing the ego's games, trying to become better than others, or to attain its own desires and security at the expense of others. Only love can tame the ego and bring it into the service of love.

In order to really love, our ego structure has to dissolve and reform on a new basis. Our hearts may have to be broken; our false pride humbled. Love then recreates the self.

Sometimes we feel that we want to love others but we cannot; we just don't have it.

Just as the cause can produce the effect, the effect can also produce the cause. The tree produces the fruit; and the fruit can produce the tree. Love has many fruits: kindness, patience, generosity, courage, self-sacrifice. Love will produce these fruits; and these fruits will engender love. This is a two way street. The effect can produce the cause. An apple contains the seed of a tree.

One of the greatest Sufis I have known, a man whose love was so tangible it was barely possible for us to be in his presence without tears, used to say: May my imitation become real.

Love is conscious relationship in presence. When we are in relationship with presence our essences are present to each other. If we love without presence we are merely projecting our neediness, lack of fulfillment, or desire on another person. The higher Love is the welcoming of otherness into ourselves as ourselves, recognizing the stranger as a friend.

With presence we hold no image of ourselves that separates us from others. Love is the absence of defenses; it is emotional nakedness. "Only one whose garment has been stripped by love is free of desire and defect." In the presence of love we find acceptance. Our self-disclosure, our emotional nakedness, helps to open the space for love. Love accepts imperfection; it loves the actuality and recognizes the potentiality.

This is the great value of the humiliation of sin and failure. Sometimes, it is not until we know our helplessness and that we have failed at love, that we can come under the grace of love, because our ego, the shell which keeps love out, has broken open. Love is not the attribute of the self-righteous and the perfect. It is the attribute of the humble, those who have realized their own nothingness, those who have failed in love.

Relationship beyond time

Just as we recognize our interdependence with our fellow human beings with whom we are in relationship here on this earth, we can also recognize our interdependence with a source of help that is outside of time. We need to find some connection with a spiritual source or tradition that can wean us from this false self's illusions and fears. If we search without true guidance we will only find this false self, we may lead ourselves in circles back again and again to our own ego.

We need to make a call to some source of love. The Sufi tradition not only has its living exemplars, it also has many great beings who live in the world of meaning: Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, Ali, Shamsi Tabriz, Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi, Ibn Arabi, Yunus Emre, Abdul Qadir Gilani, Bahauddin Naqshband, may God be pleased with them.

It is these great beings who attained unity with the Source that we call upon in a spirit of humility. If we can open to the saints through our own love and humility something can flow to us, a protective grace that can protect us from our own egos. In the end, the only thing we need to be protected from is our own ego. The ego is the enemy of our true existence, but fortunately the ego can be tamed by love, not destroyed or squashed, but tamed and put into the service of our true self.3 At dawn the shadow is long; at noon it disappears.

Prevent Heart Disease Early: EBT Heart Scans Detects Beginnings of Heart Disease

Local Bookstore is hosting heart scans for $30. Sign up now to see your heart and assess the condition of your heart.

Serenity Now Books & Gifts in Palm Harbor is conducting heart scans for $30. The scan gives a print out, determines 'actual age' of the heart, arteries, capillaries and also gives a 'grade' for the condition of your heart.

The Electron Beam CT (EBT) heart scan was developed to detect early heart disease so that heart attacks and heart surgery could be avoided. All men over age 35 and women over age 45 should undergo EBT scanning. You should consider earlier testing if you have: a family history of early heart disease, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, current or former smoker, or prolonged exposure to second hand smoke. Once heart disease is established, your calcium score should be checked on an annual basis, the calcium score gives you critical information as to how you are responding to therapy. The fact is, EBT the only technology that is FDA approved to successfully find the early signs of heart disease while it is at it's most treatable stage.

Call Serenity now for a scan that is usually $500+. 727-787-5400

Midori Salon and Spa will be celebrating their Grand Opening on Saturday, October 13 from 4pm until 8pm. Midori is Largo’s first and only “Certified Organic and Botanical” hair salon. Refreshments will be served at the Grand Opening as well as coupon giveaways and a drawing for a gift basket.

Amber Holland, owner and operator, grew up in Largo, graduated with a business degree from the University of Central Florida, and then received her cosmetology degree from Artistic Academy in Orlando. After returning to Largo to be a licensed cosmetologist, Amber began researching non-toxic alternatives to hair coloring after learning several of her clients suffered from allergies to the bleach, ammonia, or dyes found in hair colorants.

Amber chose the name Midori, which is the Japanese word for “green”. Midori Salon and Spa only uses natural, non-toxic products, as well as being environmentally friendly by recycling all product boxes and containers. Amber has chosen these products from companies all over the world for their pure quality and high performance. Midori Salon and Spa is proud to offer a non-toxic permanent hair color line that has been used on pregnant women and post cancer patients with safe and healthy results. Excellent for those that are allergic, reactive, sensitive, pregnant, losing their hair or concerned for their health and safety. These products are safer for your hair, your body, and our environment.

Midori is also promoting a botanical prescription line that addresses bacteria issues, alopecia from stress, build up, scalp disorders, and protects follicles from collapsing when losing hair. A medical scope is used to look at the hair shaft and follicle 1000 times larger to determine the best product and approach to maintain healthy hair and scalp.

Midori Salon and Spa is located at 1260 West Bay Dr, Suite A, Largo, Fla. For hours of operation or further information, please call 727-581-8791 or you can visit their website soon at www.MidoriSalonAndSpa.com.

Benefits of Wheatgrass Juice: From Fighting Germs to Increased Fertility

For the past 5 years I have been a huge proponent of wheat grass juice. Ever since I was striken with a very nasty bout of mono, I was turned on to the healing properties of wheat grass juice. My major ailment was fatigue and an inability to fight virus and heal quickly.

I cannot speak highly enough of wheat grass juice in my daily diet. I can literally see and feel a difference when I am not consistent in my intake of this nutrient rich megavitamin shot. My hair is healthier, I am more energized and balanced.

Just how does wheat grass work and what makes wheat grass juice so special?

As a grass, it is rich in cholorophyll and has the ability to concentrate nutrients from its soil. The best type of wheat grass juice is that grown in very rich soils like mineral rich soils.

Its properties are antibacterial and antiseptic in nature. Wheat grass juice can stop unfriendly bacteria from wreaking havoc on your system. This powerful green super food has been known through the ages as a source of health and well being.

Dr. Birscher, a research scientist, called chlorophyll "concentrated sun power." He said, "chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus, and the lungs."

In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its multitude of benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize Strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome chronic inner-ear inflammation and infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.

Unlimited Benefits of Wheat Grass Juice:
Helps prevent tooth decay
Neutralizes carcinogens
Cleanses blood by removing toxins and harmful chemicals
Detoxes liver, cells, tissue and blood
Lowers high blood pressure
Increases oxygen levels in the blood stream
Improved digestion
Creates balanced pH environment to prevent cancer
Increases energy
Provides healthier hair and reduces dandruff
Alleviates eczema and psoriasis
Improved ability of the body to heal wounds
Chlorophyll found in wheatgrass can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.
Has anti-aging abilities and can keep the hair from greying.

Ailments Wheat Grass Juice helps fight:
Chronic fatigue
Diabetes
Arthritis
Arteriosclerosis
Acne
Eczema
Constipation
Pancreatic troubles
High blood pressure
Mucus build-up in the intestines
Hypoglycemia
Allergies
High cholesterol
Cancer
Heart problems
Anemia
Liver troubles
Premature aging
Thyroid gland problems
Increases fertility- The high magnesium content in the chlorophyll of the wheat grass juice actually builds enzymes that increase fertility hormones.

An ounce a day can definitely keep the doctor away.

ABCs of Slowing the Aging Process: The AntiAging, AntiAlzheimer's and Dementia Diet

We all age: an unfortunate but natural truth. How quickly and how gracefully we age is the key distinguishing factor amongst those who stay young and those who do not. If you ask my 92 year old Grandma, she would tell you that age is just a number and to feel young you have to feel younger than the age you are....to that she told me she feels like she's 90!

All kidding aside; aging is a serious matter. With an increasing number of baby boomers approaching retirement and a population poised for increased cases of dementia, Alzheimer's and age related mental illnesses it is important to take time to reflect on what one can do to prevent and slow down the aging of not only our bodies but our minds as well.

For those who cannot remember long lists of details; I've compiled the A-B-Cs of my AntiAging program for your convenience.

A: Antioxidants
B: B12 and Folic Acid
C: Challenge the Mind

Antioxidant rich foods and supplements retard the oxidation of our cells. Free radical damage is more than just skin deep; cellular slow down occurs as a result of aging but also due to a lack of antioxidants. Pumping up your diet with rich, leafy greens, dark veggies, low sodium and high fiber can ensure you promote your cellular regeneration. Taking supplements like Vitamins C(Ester form) & E Grape Seed Extract, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L-Carnitine and Selenium are key as we age.

B12 and Folic Acid have been linked to decreased energy but also decreased mental function. According to a new study published in the Archives of Neurology offers further insight to the belief that diets high in folic acid (folate) may be associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease. Columbia University researchers followed the diets of over 900 senior citizens for six years. They found that individuals with the highest intake of folate were the least likely to subsequently develop Alzheimers. Interestingly, folate from both food sources and from supplements were included. Folic Acid is suggested to be supplemented together with B12. A few foods rich in Folic Acid are Brewers Yeast, Wheat Germ, Soy Beans, Lentils, Spinach, Kale, Peanut Butter and Kale.

Challenging the mind is essential to maintaining good mental health. "The research is clear on this issue: challenging your mind on a regular basis helps to lower the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease," says Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Aging: Your Lifelong Guide to Physical and Spiritual Well-Being. Puzzling (Cross words, Sudoku), a positive mental outlook and keeping the mind engaged is absolutely essential to slow aging. Think young to be and feel young.

And too, don't forget your omega fatty acids!

Publix and Green Wise: Future Opening in Tampa creates an Organic Market Mecca in South Tampa

There is a buzz in the air; every one I've spoken to and overheard at coffee shops, shopping malls and in restaurants are discussing the future opening of a Publix Green Wise on Howard and Azeele. It's pretty exciting to think that just over 3 years ago there were slim options for the typical natural and organic market. Now Tampa will have 3 very large and well stocked natural markets in less than a 2 mile radius; Wild Oats, Fresh Market & Green Wise.

On September 25, 2007, Publix launched the first independent Green Wise store in Palm Beach Gardens. The Tampa store is expected to open late 2008 and is speculated to be situated above the parking garage.

Publix has expanded into states north of Georgia and views the Green Wise expansion as an opportunity to stay competitive in a market where consumers are more health food conscious.

Regardless of an opening in a year, my friends and I view this as a great oppotunity to get the best natural and organic markets in the South Tampa area.

Thank you Publix for promoting the competition in the natural market space!

St. Petersburg's Most Relaxing Coffee Shop: Wings Bookstore Promotes a Meditative and Productive Coffee Break

St. Petersburg has changed a lot over the past 6 years. Growing up here- 4th Street was merely a place where my parents would drag us for shopping at Gateway Mall or breakfast at Kissin' Cousins after church services on Sunday. Never did we have amazing coffee shops and restaurants like Outback an Tiajuana Flats or even a Lifestyles gym.

As I'm getting reacquainted with our lovely and what I considered sleepy St. Petersburg community; I'm discovering some great little nooks, networking groups and places that promote solice, peace and embody the holisitc spirit I now choose to embrace.

Yesterday I ran out for an errand and had heard a lot about the First Unity Campus bookstore and coffee shop. I stopped in and was supremely impressed by the atmosphere of this combo bookstore and coffee shop. The two clerks were extremely helpful and friendly and their store is not overly crowded but had a wide selection of various spiritual, mystical and enlightening books, dvds and jewelery.

What really appealed most to me was the cozy coffee corner of this store. It had at least 6 tables and a big cushy couch. The color scheme and relaxing music created an atmosphere to aparently inspired students, afternoon knitting circles and individuals to come in for an hour or more of peace.

I can see myself utilizing this relaxing shop as a way to escape during the day to study or work in a very serene and peaceful environment. It isn't busy and bustling as your typical starbucks, but offers a chance for a peaceful reading of the newpaper or reflection on how great St. Pete really is today!

Top 5 Spots to Roller Blade in Tampa Bay

Roller Blading is a great, fun way to exercise while enjoying really great, tropical Florida scenery. Having just moved back home after living up in cold New England- I decided to scope out the best top 5 spots to roller blade in the area to get just the right mix of blading and fun scenery.

1. Pinellas Trail- longest trail in Pinellas County
2. Fort Desoto - breathtaking views of the water, sunshine skyway and you can even glimpse a manatee or two.
3. Skyway Trail
4. Old Gandy Bridge (Friendship Trail Bridge)
5. Upper Tampa Bay Trail

These top 5 roller blading destinations are spacious, expansive and have amazing scenery along the way. If you are looking for a long trail or a short trail- the Tampa Bay area has everything that you need.

If you choose to travel to Fort Desoto; the North Beach was rated #1 (number one) beach in America in 2005. The trail goes along the edge of the beach and sand dunes; the fort and beaches are an ode to the old Florida beaches; untouched by concrete and development.

In my research I also found a really great group that gathers each Sunday morning for various Roller Blading excursions around the bay. The Sunday Bladers group is an energetic group that takes rollerblading seriously!

The choices are many; but always remember to wear your safety gear when roller blading.

How to Repel and Avoid Mosquito Bites Using Natural Remedies

Accompanied with the heat and humidity of summer are pesky, itchy and annoying mosquito bites. Mosquitoes bite because they are attracted to CO2 and lactic acid. If you are a living, breathing mammal, you are a walking target.

I dread the mosquito months and have since I was a child growing up in Florida. I'm plagued by my body's reaction to these small bites that turn into large almost welt-like, itchy raised bumps on my legs and arms. There have been seasons where running out to get the paper in the morning or taking out the trash has inflicted a handful of bites.

Modern technology has created great inventions like the mosquito magnet and the bug zapper but most communities or individuals in the south have not invested in these bug repellents. Apart from putting on topical insect repellent products laced with unhealthy chemicals like DEET that can cause brain toxicity; there are a few alternative options that have yielded positive results in my battle to protect my extremities from mosquito bites.

Over the years, I have asked myself: what products repel insect bites like mosquitoes? I've invested in products like skin-so-soft and OFF mosquito sprays but have always wanted to find a more natural alternative and solution to these bug bites.

Diet can play a very pivital role in making oneself less attractive to the mosquitoes. Diets high in garlic (and garlic tablets) and B complex can actually change the extremely faint scent of an individual; thus making onself less attractive to a hungry mosquito. Garlic literally does repel the vampires. Other herbs that are also important in repelling mosquitoes are: citronella, cedar, verbena, geranium, lavender, pine, cinnamon, rosemary, basil, thyme, allspice, and peppermint.

Vitamin B1 has a unique ability to create an obnoxious scent that stops mosquitoes in their tracks. Ingested orally each day, an individual can take 15mgs of B1 for every 30 pounds of body weight.

It is indeed possible to combat mosquitoes naturally and still enjoy the summer months.

Get Fit Without Workouts: Live Longer with 15 easy, gym-free workouts in Florida

The gym: a dreaded, unpleasant experience for many. For many women, the gym is a scary place full of bizarre contraptions we call work out machines and big buff men grunting and sweating something fierce. If you are like me; you'll try to avoid the gym as much as possible but still desire to stay trim and expose your heart to a good cardiovascular workout.

With great fall weather coming our way; we have many chances to enjoy the pleasures and fun events fall brings. Outdoor activities like backpacking, hiking, rock climbing and biking are great ways to enjoy the changing of the seasons, view the fall foliage and burn off some calories.

If you are a busy parent; your children keep you busy and very active. Lifting your children up stairs, playing tag with them at a park and pushing them on swings or playing catch are fun ways to interact with your kids and burn a few calories as well. With our technology driven world, it is essential that parents show their children fun and interactive ways to stay fit. Plus, your big bonus is that you are creating fond memories for them to have for their entire lives.

Often, a lot of Floridians will travel north during the Fall months; either for viewing the changing of the leaves in the New England or Mid-Atlantic states or for the fall holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. We have a chance to wear warmer clothing and enjoy the crisper fall air. Additionally, we can enjoy apple picking, pumpkin patch picking and the carving of the pumkpins and even the task of picking out that special Christmas tree on a mountainside in North Carolina. All these holiday events add additional exercise to your weekly routines and help burn calories.

Taking a brisk walk on Clearwater or St. Pete beach or along a sidewalk like Bayshore is rejuvenating and allows your mind to relax and appreciate our beautiful surroundings. Rollerblading along the old Gandy Bridge or kayaking at Ft. Desoto may even allow you to see a few dolphins or manatee.

When it comes to fitness and staying young: making your fitness and workout routines fun, enjoyable and easy are key. You are more inclined to keep with this type of fitness program. Plus, you live longer and get to enjoy friends, family and nature...what could be better than that?

Osteoporosis and Sun Exposure: How getting out in the sun for 10 minutes can help cut the risks of Osteoperosis

Living in Florida there is certainly not a shortage of sun rays. However, there is a significant amount of lotions and facial products containing sun screen that restrict the harmful UVA and UVB rays from our skin. 99% of the time this is a good thing; however it also can restrict our exposure to an essential vitamin, vitamin D. Sunscreens with SPF of 8 or higher actually block the UV rays that produce Vitamin D.

As women and men age; the risk factors for osteoporosis increase as we lose muscle mass and subsequently bone density. It is very important that we utilize the sun to help us minimize the risk of bone loss for at least 10-15 minutes at least 2-3 times a week to the face, back, hands or arms without sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D.

An initial exposure to sunlight (10 -15 minutes) allows adequate time for Vitamin D synthesis and should be followed by application of a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect the skin. For individuals over the age of 70 require almost double the exposure since their daily need of vitamin D.

Foods rich in Vitamin D, like fatty fish, egg yolks and milk are essential dietary items yet sun exposure is the most efficient way for your body to produce Vitamin D.

Depending on the geographical latitude, season, time of day, cloud cover, smog, and sunscreen use all affect UV ray exposure and vitamin D synthesis. There have been studies that have shown greater incidences of osteoporosis above the mason dixon line. Luckily, all us Floridians have to do is step outside and enjoy the natural sunlight to strengthen our bones.
